Introducing...my BFF!

As I mentioned last week, my best friend Laura will be helping us out on Wednesdays, teaching us some tricks of the trade in the kitchen.  I love the little tips she gives, especially the ones for today, which involve multiple uses for the same kitchen item (eliminating the need to buy 3 or 4 other gadgets from the expensive kitchen stores!)  Take it away, Laura...

Multiple uses for a 12"X12" piece of solid, non-slip shelf liner"

1. Cutting Board Mat:  Place under your cutting board to keep it from sliding around on the counter.  This will help prevent the cutting board from running away from you while chopping, which could be dangerous!

2. Jar Opener:  Unlike a specialty kitchen gadget, it fits any jar or bottle! (But...if the hubby is around, make sure to pat his "man ego" and have the big strong man of the house open it!)

3. Garlic Peeler:  You can buy a cylindrical piece of the same material at the kitchen gadget store (for $10 or more), OR...just place a clove of garlic near the middle of the mat, fold over, and roll under your palm using mild pressure. Voila! A peeled garlic clove! And the little garlic paper isn't all over your counter or floor--it's all on the mat, so you can just shake it over the trash!

4. Counter Protector:  Place it under a can when using a can opener to prevent scratching your countertop.

**Care and Storage**  Mat can be washed in the dishwasher (on the top rack) or by hand with warm water and soap.  It can be folded or rolled up to be stored easily in your drawer or cupboard.

A special thanks to Laura for her first little kitchen secrets!  Do any of you have questions for the chef?  Anything you need help with in your own kitchen, or any other tips you'd like to discuss?  Please share!
